Setting the Record Straight: Commissioner Byrd Clarifies $1.3 Million Funding Details

MAYO, FL - The landscape of Lafayette County infrastructure is shifting toward a more resilient future following a major funding announcement from the Governor’s office.

While the big numbers in the headlines often spark excitement, local leaders are moving quickly to ensure residents understand exactly where those dollars are headed and what it means for the county’s wallet.

Commissioner Mason E. Byrd of District 2 has stepped forward to provide essential clarity on the recent influx of cash, confirming that a significant $1.3 million award is set to transform key local corridors that have long been a priority for the Board of County Commissioners.

Straight from the Commissioner’s Desk

In an email sent to Lafayette County News to clear up any confusion regarding the scope of the project, Commissioner Byrd provided the following direct clarification:

"I read the recent article regarding the Governor’s funding announcement for Lafayette County and would like to provide some clarification.
While the announcement indicated that $1.3 million was awarded for various projects, these funds are specifically part of the CDBG-DR (Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery) Infrastructure Repair Program (IRP) earmarked for SE Arabian and Badger Roads (often referred to locally as 'River Road'). This is a fully funded grant, meaning the county is not required to provide matching funds, which improves our infrastructure while saving taxpayer money.
The need for these improvements became clear following recent hurricanes, and this work would not have been possible without this specific funding. We have applied for several other grants as well and remain hopeful for positive results from those applications."

A Win-Win for the County Ledger

Perhaps the most significant detail for local residents is the financial structure of the award. In many cases, state and federal grants require the local government to "match" a portion of the funds, which can be a heavy lift for a small county budget. However, as noted by Commissioner Byrd, this specific award is a "fully funded" grant.

This designation is a major victory for the Board of County Commissioners, as it allows for million-dollar improvements to be completed at zero cost to the local taxpayer. With more grant applications still pending, the community remains hopeful that this is just the first of several infrastructure wins.
